Reading Log Entry #4

I've enjoyed looking at your monsters and seeing how closely your own drawing matched the drawing based on your description. As we discussed in class, the point of that little activity was to underscore your responsibility as a writer. It is your job to help your audience see what you see and experience things that you experience. So, as we begin discussing your next reading log, I'd certainly like for you to keep our experience with "monster writing" in mind.

In addition, your text talks about what effective descriptive essays need--it gives you a list of do's and don'ts. So based on the monster writing experience and the information in the text, answer the following questions:

Of the sample descriptive essays, which did you like the best? Why? What were you favorite visual images?

I look forward to your posts!

As always, Happy Writing--

Mrs. M

I like "Treeclimbing" the best. It creates a really good picture of the basement they played in and the fun times they had there. Nothing was left to question about what it was like or how they were "tree climbers." My favorite images were of playing in the laundry chute, and of playing in the basement all day.

By far my favorite descriptive esaay was "A Day at the Theme Park". I'm a sucker for essays with a little bit of humor in them. I like to laugh and the essay made me laugh. The points that the author were so true. Sad, but true. The author said all the things about theme parks that no one else will say becuase the theme park has become the national family vacation. The fact that he describes the asphalt as being so hot that you could discover the boiling point of tennis shoes is so true it's funny. The food at theme parks was also a favotie topic of mine. I hate theme park food. The author made me almost start to smell it. Wonderful descriptions can sometimes be a curse. But I enjoyed the essay overall.

I definitely agree with Jeff Cranford.
In "Treeclimbing" there was nothing left to question. They filled in all the details to create a perfect mental image. I had such an easy time visualizing the fun times they had.

My favorite essay in the text was the "Treeclimbing" essay. The auther does a very good job of describing her Papa's house and all the things they did there. It's almost as though you can get inside her head and feel what she is feeling, when the house goes up for sale. I like the image of the sky looking like an easter egg God had dipped in blue dye. However, my favortite sentence is the last one. It really seems to tie the story together and leave readers thinking, wow.

My favorite was the one on wedding traditions. I like the image of someone wearing a piece of grass or rope around the finger as their wedding band, it gives a real meaning to the phrase "tying the knot." I was also interested in the reason behind why they throw rice at the bride and groom after the wedding. I like to try and picture the rice driving away evil spirits as if they just evaporated when touched by the rice. The most interesting part though was that it used to be believed that the "ring finger" contained a vein that ran directly to the heart.

Of the sample essays, my favorite definitely was the "Beauty and the Beef." I am a food person so I like to eat it, hear about it, and think about it. The essay is very true and you can relate to it very easily; the burgers on television look a hundred times better than the ones you get at the actual store that is advertising them. When you see the commercials you say "Eww that looks good," but it honestly isn't always as good as it looks. The images that stick when I read this were the images of someone burning the burger to give it the broiling stripes and the image of 75 "gorgeous" hamburgers dumped in the garbage all for a 5 minute commercial. This essay made the point that commercialism can be misleading because it can. You wish they looked that good but they don't. The essay was very interesting to me because I didn't know so much went into something so small.

"A Day at the Theme Park" was my favorite essay. The use of humor really lightened the essay and made it fun to read. For me an essay that "complains" a lot would get on my nerves, but this author's details was funny, funny, funny!

Of the sample essays my favorite was deffinetly the "Treeclimbing". I'm not very good at descriptive writing but reading that made me think a little harder on how to write more descriptive. I really enjoyed it because I could picture every thing the writer was talking about just by his descriptions. My favorite visual was the sky looked like an easter egg dipped in blue dye.

I would have to say A Day at the Theme Park was my favorite essay of all. I lived most of y life in Orlando FL, theme park capital of the world, so I know first hand what the author is saying and writing about. The detail he used in the essay brought back so many memories of my child hood so that made it even more enjoyable.

Along with the majority of the people, my favorite descriptive essay was "Treeclimbing." You could really picture the basement that the boys would play in when they were young, thanks to the descriptive deatails.

Reading through the essays, the one that stood out to me was "Treeclimbing." Not only did it give me a visual depiction of the author's childhood, but it also reminded me of my own. My favorite phrase "deliciously cool" seems so refreshing to me. The way she vividly describes playing in the laundry chute and basement makes you feel like you are there.

My favorite essay was the "A Day at the Theme Park" because it was completely true. I did the exact same thing to my parents when we went on vacation to parks. It really described how you felt, saw and experienced the rides and food. My absolute favorite description was when it described how theme parks are nothing but "moneypits".

In the reading the descriptive sample essay that I liked the best was page 59 about the horrible roomate. When the revised version of the "no specific details" paragraph gave me a full body image of the room-mate. I pictured first class, white, trailer-trash girl, probably missing a few teeth and has 4 month old bleached hair, that thinks she is queen of the world. Also, the revised version really signifies how much of a difference details con really make.
